Helping successful kids feel as good as they look on paper.

Therapy for gifted, high-achieving, and sensitive children and teens.

Your child is bright, capable, and successful.

Yet beneath the surface, they may struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, self-doubt, or pressure to perform.

I help children, teens, and their caregivers build confidence, resilience, and emotional wellbeing so success feels as good on the inside as it looks on paper.

Reliable Connection

Good therapy really works! However, it can be hard to find a therapist that both you and your kid feel connected to. I ensure we all stay in reliable working relationship to help you create the meaningful change you’re looking for in your family and have the tools you need to support your kid.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Give me a call at (424) 222-9464‬ or reach me by email at hello@eringauvin.com. You can also use the contact form on the bottom of this page. We can speak about your family and how I might be able to help.

If we agree to begin care together, I will send over to you demographic and consent forms that will help me get a full picture of all things your family, as well as evidence-based screenings that will provide us with an in-depth, measurement-based insights into your child's mental health symptoms for us to review during the Assessment Session.

Your family's care begins with a 90 minute Assessment Session. This appointment is made up of 1:1 time between the provider and caregiver(s), followed by time meeting with your child/teen. The extended time allotted allows for comprehensive discussion of your family's strengths, concerns and therapy goals.

From this Assessment, we will collaborate to create a comprehensive care plan based on your needs and goals that will include practical caregiver strategies that will be implementable at home right away.

We will schedule recurring sessions for a weekly or biweekly basis, depending on clinical need and your family's schedule.

You can also use the contact form on the bottom of this page.

We can briefly speak about your family and how I could help. If we decide we want to work together, then we’ll schedule an Assessment Session appointment and get you into care!

  • Yes, I solely conduct sessions virtually through Zoom.

Some clients choose virtual therapy due to convenience, comfort, traffic, parking or personal preference. If you live in California, Arizona, or Tennessee, we can work together.

  • For my child/adolescent clients, I work best with ages 6 and up and involve parents and caregivers in treatment.

For parents and caregivers, I offer a range of support on a number of challenges. See Services for more information on who I love to work with.

  • I do not take insurance and am an 'Out-of-Network' provider. Here are some advantages to this:

    • Your child won’t have to have a diagnosis label permanently attached to your health record.

    • Your records are protected. Very personal information cannot be obtained by the insurance company.

    • Your care is not dictated by the insurance company, but by the collaborative efforts formed by my expertise in mental health and your expertise on your family.

I’ll gladly provide a superbill for 'Out-of-Network' benefits, which is an itemized receipt that you can submit to your insurance company to request reimbursement. We can work out together who you need to contact to fully understand your benefits.

  • It's very challenging to get quality mental health care in the United States.

One barrier, for adults and children alike, is that insurance coverage for mental health care is not equal to coverage for physical health care.

Many insurance companies have different benefits for “in-network” providers and “out of network” providers of mental health care.

More than 80% of mental health providers in the US provide fee-for-service, “out-of-network” care.

    Why aren't more therapists "in-network"?

This is because insurance companies often pay far below the market rate for a therapist’s service. They also may have criteria for coverage; if your mental health challenge doesn’t meet these criteria, you could be denied care.

From the patient side, “in-network” providers can be hard to find. They are often not taking new patients or have long wait-lists. It can also be hard to find care based on quality or expertise.

I am available to help you understand your insurance’s mental health benefits and to help you navigate getting reimbursed by your insurance company to the fullest amount possible.

  • Call your insurance company (back of your card) and ask:

    • “Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health (specifically for CPT code 90834)?”

    • “Do I have a deductible? What is it? Do I have co-insurance?”

If you have out-of-network benefits, you will be responsible for the upfront session costs, and then I provide a superbill to send to your insurance for reimbursement.

  • My hourly rate for sessions (45 minutes) is $250.

I keep a few slots open for sliding scale at any given time.

Care for every family begins with an initial Assessment Session (90 minutes) that includes caregiver(s) and child and has a fee equal to two sessions.

In our consultation, let’s talk about money and any concerns you may have about the costs of therapy, including possible 'Out-of-Network' insurance benefits and accessing sliding scale services.

  • I accept payments from all major credit cards, FSA and HSA cards.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Read how to request a Good Faith Estimate Notice here.

About Erin

My name is Erin. I’m a child and family therapist based in South Pasadena, providing telehealth therapy for families in California.

Most people click on an “About” page to figure out whether a therapist might be a good fit. Therapists can share similar credentials and training, but still feel dramatically different in practice. Finding the right provider for your child can take time, and that process can feel exhausting when your family is already in need of support.

So, who am I, and what might it be like working with me?

Many of the families I work with have children who are bright, creative, highly sensitive, or high-achieving. These are often the kids who look like they are doing well from the outside while quietly struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, or pressure to succeed. I enjoy helping these kids build confidence and resilience while also supporting caregivers in understanding the challenges that may not always be visible.

I also know this kind of child from the inside. I was a high-performing, highly sensitive kid myself: academically driven, deeply involved, hard on myself, and drawn to both achievement and creativity. I graduated summa cum laude from high school, completed enough AP coursework to nearly skip my first year of college, founded clubs, played varsity soccer, and spent much of my adolescence playing, recording, and performing music. I understand the strengths that can come with being a driven, capable child, and I also understand how easily pressure, sensitivity, and self-expectation can become heavy.

Professionally, I’ve spent more than a decade in mental health and seven years working explicitly as a clinician with children and families. I graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work in 2012, then earned my Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee- Knoxville in 2018 with a certificate in Trauma Treatment. I hold active LCSW licenses in California, Arizona, Tennessee, and Washington. I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for children and hold a Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International for the treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

Before opening my private practice, my work took place across many settings: schools, hospitals, prisons, shelters, encampments, family homes, and intensive medical environments. Early in my career, I partnered with a pilot program Street Psychiatry team led by Dr. Sheryl Fleisch of Vanderbilt, and later trained at Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital alongside physicians specializing in child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and first-break psychosis. I also completed Belmont University’s Summer Accounting Institute to strengthen my business skills as a future small business owner.

Those experiences taught me that children and families are never just one thing: a child can be successful and anxious, gifted and overwhelmed, sensitive and strong, capable and still in need of care. I bring the full range of my clinical background into my work, but I also bring a deep belief that most serious dilemmas can be navigated with clarity, creativity, and companionship.

Outside of therapy, I’m an amateur cook with an inexplicable affinity for home repairs, reading, and wandering through used bookstores. My wife and I live in South Pasadena and enjoy exploring LA, trying new restaurants, and spending time with friends and family. One more fun fact: I’m also a twin.

Resources

I’m a believer in sharing resources with everyone – clients, colleagues, friends, enemies.

Helping people to find the sources that I use is one of the ways that I try to empower people to be their own best authority about what makes their family work.
